FG Restores NMEC Autonomy to Combat Illiteracy

On the occasion of the 2026 International Literacy Day, the Federal Ministry of Education announced the restoration of full institutional autonomy to the National Commission for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-Formal Education (NMEC). Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Ahmad, stated that this move is crucial for strengthening Nigeria's mass literacy and non-formal education programs.

The government plans to expand infrastructure for adult and non-formal education, including establishing a new National Centre for Adult Education and a permanent headquarters for NMEC. Community learning centers will be activated, with NMEC staff serving as instructors in areas lacking formal education access.

Ahmad emphasized the need for stakeholder involvement to tackle youth and adult illiteracy effectively. She expressed confidence in Nigeria's progress towards Sustainable Development Goal 4, which focuses on quality and inclusive education.

The minister also assured that rural communities would be included in initiatives involving digital technology and artificial intelligence in teacher training.
