Nigerian Government Restores NMEC Autonomy for Literacy

The Nigerian government has restored the full autonomy of the National Mass Education Commission (NMEC), as disclosed by the Minister of State for Education, Suwaiba Ahmad, during the 2026 International Literacy Day Ministerial Press Briefing in Abuja. Ahmad emphasized that the restoration is crucial for effective planning and coordination in addressing the adult literacy challenge.

She acknowledged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his support in this initiative. The Minister outlined ongoing interventions, including the rehabilitation of facilities at the National Centre for Adult Education in Kano and the establishment of learning centres nationwide.

These centres aim to provide flexible pathways for young people and adults who missed formal education. Ahmad called for collaboration from various stakeholders, including state and local governments, civil society, and the private sector, to enhance literacy programs.

She also mentioned Nigeria's progress towards Sustainable Development Goal 4 and initiatives to integrate rural communities into the digital economy.
