IPI Nigeria Demands Action Against Police for TV Raid

The Institute for Press International (IPI) Nigeria has condemned the unlawful invasion of JKD TV Hamada Radio Network in Kaduna by armed police officers. In a statement signed by Secretary Ahmed Shekarau and Legal Adviser Tobi Soniyi, IPI Nigeria described the incident as reminiscent of media oppression during Nigeria's military era.

The organization urged Inspector General of Police Tunji Rilwan Disu to identify and sanction the officer responsible for the invasion, emphasizing the need for police to refrain from interfering in civil matters. The police reportedly acted on instructions to arrest journalist Zainab Salihu Yabagi concerning a video produced by JKD Radio & Television about Ibrahim Kabir Masari, Special Adviser to the President on Political Affairs.

IPI Nigeria expressed concern over ongoing violations of human rights and press freedom, calling for accountability to prevent further abuses. The organization reiterated that a lack of accountability is a significant factor in the continued infringement of rights by police officers.
