Lawyer Challenges IGP on Recording Police Officers

Human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong has countered the position of Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu regarding the recording of police officers while on duty. Effiong stated that Nigerians possess a constitutional right to record law enforcement officers in public, especially during their official duties.

This statement came in response to Disu's warning against using police officers for social media content, which he described as "very, very demoralising" for the police force. Effiong questioned the IGP's definition of content creation, asking whether it pertains to financial gain or public enlightenment.

He noted that the Nigeria Police Force itself engages in content creation through its digital platforms. Effiong called for clarity on Disu's warning, particularly whether it targets skit makers and entertainers.

He also expressed concern over the police's apprehension regarding citizens filming officers during their duties, questioning the prevalence of such incidents.
