IRIAD Calls for Urgent Action on Abuja Flooding Prevention

The Initiative for Research, Innovation and Advocacy in Development (IRIAD) has called for urgent and coordinated action to address the recurring flooding in Abuja. This appeal was made by Princess Hamman-Obels, Director of The Electoral Hub, in a statement on Friday.

The call follows flash flooding in various areas of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), which left residents stranded and caused significant damage to vehicles and property. Affected locations included Wuse II, Gudu, Lokogoma, and several others.

Princess Hamman-Obels expressed sympathy for those impacted and noted that the flooding was anticipated, as the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NiHSA) had identified the FCT as a high-risk area for flooding on July 30, 2026. She cautioned against unverified reports of the number of affected individuals and emphasized the need for proactive flood management measures, including regular drainage maintenance, flood-risk mapping, and community preparedness.

IRIAD urged the FCT Administration to enhance emergency preparedness and preventive actions in vulnerable communities.
