Kano Declares Public Holiday for Islamic New Year 2026

The Kano State Government has officially declared Tuesday, June 16, 2026, as a public holiday to commemorate the Islamic New Year, which marks the beginning of 1st Muharram 1448AH. This decision was approved by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and communicated through a circular issued by the Director of Administration, Safiyya Ali Suleiman, on behalf of the Head of Civil Service.

The circular emphasizes the significance of the Islamic calendar and encourages civil servants and residents to use the occasion for sober reflection and prayer, promoting peace, stability, and progress in Kano State, Nigeria. All public institutions across the state will remain closed on this day to allow workers and residents to observe the commencement of the new Islamic year.
