Nigerian Police Clarifies IG's Stance on Tactical Teams

The Nigerian Police Force, through Deputy Commissioner of Police Anthony Placid, clarified the misinterpretation of Inspector General Olatunji Disu's concerns regarding the proliferation of tactical teams across the country. Reports circulating in digital media suggested that the IG ordered the immediate dissolution of multiple tactical units operating within state commands nationwide.

However, the police authority described these reports as misrepresentations of the IG's direct statements. The IG recognizes the critical role that tactical teams play in crime fighting but is concerned about the unchecked expansion and challenges posed by poorly supervised teams, which could deplete manpower and weaken core police duties.

To address these concerns, the IG has directed a rationalization of tactical teams, limiting each area command to a maximum of five teams and three teams per command. This restructuring does not affect state government-established security outfits, such as the Rapid Response Squad in Lagos and the Special Response Squad in Oyo State.

The aim is to strengthen supervision, improve accountability, and enhance community policing.
