NGO Cappa Calls for Stronger Women's Rights in Nigeria

The NGO Cappa has issued a statement calling for stronger protections and inclusive policies for women in Nigeria as part of the lead-up to International Women's Day 2026. The organization emphasizes the critical role women play in managing household resources and supporting families amid economic challenges.

Cappa highlights alarming statistics, noting that 31% of Nigerian women aged 15-49 have experienced physical violence, and there were 10,326 reported cases of gender-based violence from January to September 2025. The statement also points out that women's representation in political decision-making is extremely low, with only 3.9% of legislative seats occupied by women in Nigeria, ranking the country 180 out of 185 globally.

Cappa urges the government to strengthen laws against gender-based violence, improve access to essential services, and implement gender-responsive budgeting. They advocate for legislative reforms, including special seats for women, to enhance their political representation and influence in shaping national policies.
