FCT Widows Showcase Empowerment Skills at IWD Event

On June 23, 2026, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) hosted an event where widows showcased their empowerment skills, organized by the Ministry of Women Affairs in collaboration with the Helpline Social Support Initiative (HSSI). Hajiya Imman Sulaiman Ibrahim represented the Chairman of the Board of Directors, Maryam Babangida, at the event.

Dr. Joan Jummai Idonij from the National Centre for Women Development noted that there are approximately 258 million widows worldwide, emphasizing their central role in family stability and community development. The event's theme focused on justice, dignity, and economic empowerment for widows, urging governments and institutions to move beyond mere sympathy to actionable support.

The HSSI operates 21 clusters across various states, including Kogi, Niger, Nasarawa, Kaduna, and Enugu, aiming to restore dignity and transform the lives of widows through financial literacy programs and support initiatives. Beneficiaries shared their experiences, showcasing resilience and determination.
