Chiba Prefecture Faces Severe Flooding After Heavy Rains

Chiba Prefecture in eastern Japan has experienced devastating heavy rains, resulting in at least eight fatalities. The Japan Meteorological Agency described the rainfall as “unprecedented,” leading to widespread flooding, power outages affecting over 20,000 households, and significant infrastructure damage.

On August 14, 2026, local authorities issued the highest level of emergency warning, which was later downgraded to level four on Friday morning. However, officials continued to advise caution due to persistent risks of flooding and landslides.

The region received nearly 350 millimeters (13.7 inches) of rain in just 12 hours, prompting the issuance of a Level 5 emergency heavy rain warning for the first time in the area. Approximately 6,000 travelers were stranded overnight at Narita International Airport due to suspended train services.

As the rainfall subsided, focus shifted to rescue operations and restoring essential services following one of the most severe weather events in recent years.
