Japan Increases Visa Fees for Nigerians by 400%

The Japanese government has approved a significant increase in visa fees for Nigerians and other foreign nationals, raising them by 400%. This decision, made during a cabinet meeting on Friday, marks the first revision of visa fees since 1978.

The new fee structure will see single-entry visa fees rise from 3,000 yen to 18,600 yen, and multiple-entry visa fees increase from 6,000 yen to 37,200 yen. These changes will take effect on July 1, 2023.

Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi stated that the decision was made after careful consideration of various factors and is not expected to immediately impact inbound tourism. The increase is part of a broader effort to generate additional revenue to cover administrative costs associated with managing Japan's growing foreign population, which is projected to reach a record 4.13 million by the end of 2025.

The government aims to align its visa and residency-related charges with those of Western countries.
