Kaduna Governor Grants Freedom to 97 Inmates on Democracy Day

Governor Uba Sani freed 97 detainees from Kaduna correctional facilities on June 12, offering cash support and vocational training for reintegration.
Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani released 97 inmates from the state's correctional centres on Friday as part of Democracy Day commemorations on June 12, 2026. The clemency exercise was accompanied by cash grants and enrolment opportunities in the state's vocational training institutions to help freed prisoners transition back into their communities.
The governor's office explained that the clemency power represents a constitutional prerogative exercised according to recommendations from the Kaduna State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy. The review process examined eligible cases individually, resulting in a combination of outright releases and sentence commutations, with some inmates required to settle outstanding fines.
During remarks at the correctional facility, Governor Sani described Democracy Day as an occasion for Nigerians to reflect on the sacrifices made in restoring democratic governance. He reaffirmed his administration's commitment to justice and rehabilitation within the criminal justice system, emphasising inclusion in government programmes.
The released inmates were informed of their eligibility to enrol in state-owned vocational training schemes designed to equip them with skills for employment and self-reliance. The cash grants component of the initiative was intended to support their immediate needs as they begin their reintegration process into society.
