Jeremy Doku Faces Backlash Over World Cup Decision

Jeremy Doku, a 24-year-old winger for Manchester City, has sparked controversy after stating he wishes to leave the Belgium National Football Team's World Cup camp to attend the birth of his first child. Doku's wife, Shireen, is due to give birth during the second week of July, coinciding with Belgium's participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup quarter-finals.

He emphasized the importance of family, stating, "Nobody wants to miss the birth of their first child." This statement led to widespread criticism on social media, with French TV presenter Franc Pierron among those condemning Doku's priorities, arguing that a World Cup opportunity is a once-in-a-lifetime event. Former boxing champion Brahim Asloum also criticized Doku, suggesting that he should not miss the World Cup for childbirth.

In response to the backlash, Pierron later apologized, clarifying that she did not intend to dismiss Doku's role as a father. Doku will miss Belgium's upcoming match against Iran as he recovers from illness.
