Jessica Oji Wins Nigeria's First U20 Field Event Gold

Jessica Oji, a 19-year-old Nigerian athlete, made history by becoming the first Nigerian to win a gold medal in a field event at the World U20 Athletics Championships. This achievement occurred during the women's shot put final held in Eugene, Oregon, United States, where she delivered a winning throw of 18.08 meters.

Oji's performance included an opening throw of 18.05m, followed by her gold-winning throw of 18.08m, and a final throw of 18.07m, making her the only athlete in the final to surpass the 18-meter mark. This victory marks a significant breakthrough for Nigerian athletics, particularly in field events, where the country has struggled historically.

Prior to Oji's win, no Nigerian had ever claimed gold in any field event at the World U20 Championships. Oji's success is expected to inspire increased investment in field events in Nigeria.

Earlier in 2023, she switched her sporting allegiance from the United States to Nigeria and won a silver medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
