Jigawa Medical University Recognized as Nigeria's 70th University

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has recognized Jigawa Medical University as Nigeria's 70th state-owned university, a milestone in enhancing healthcare education. This recognition is notable as it marks the first time a state government has acquired a private university and converted it into a public institution within Nigeria's university system.

NUC Executive Secretary emphasized that this development would improve access to quality medical education and address the shortage of healthcare workers, where one doctor currently serves about 4,000 patients. The NUC will notify relevant agencies, including the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), of the university's new status.

The Jigawa State Governor, Namadi, stated that the establishment of this specialized institution aims to strengthen healthcare manpower development, as the state currently sponsors around 200 medical students abroad. He assured that the state government would provide necessary resources for the university's transformation into a center of excellence.
