Jigawa Launches Cross-Border Water Plan to Reduce Clashes

On Wednesday, Governor Malam Umar Namadi of Jigawa State unveiled a cross-border water strategy designed to address security challenges arising from seasonal livestock migration from the Niger Republic. According to a press release from the Governor's Chief Press Secretary, Muham Hamisu Gumel, the initiative aims to manage the influx of cattle and camels into Jigawa during harsh weather conditions, which has been a significant source of pressure on local resources and a potential trigger for conflicts between farmers and herders.

The state government plans to provide water facilities across the border to support pastoralists, allowing them to remain longer in Nigerian territory until farmers have harvested their crops. This strategy is expected to significantly reduce clashes and improve peaceful coexistence in the region.

The announcement followed a courtesy visit from a delegation led by Ambassador M.D. Aliyu Dure from the Strategic Intelligence Management Institute.
