On Saturday evening, a bombing at Jilli Market in the Gubio Geidam local government area of Borno State resulted in the deaths of over 200 traders. Eyewitness Umar Bomai reported that the airstrike was part of a military operation targeting suspected Boko Haram insurgents believed to be collecting levies from traders. Idriss Alhaji Baffa, a community volunteer, noted that the specialist hospital in Geidam was overwhelmed and lacked sufficient beds for the victims. The death toll, as confirmed by local councillor Malam Lawan Zanna, continues to rise as bodies are discovered. Babagana Bukar, a resident whose father was among the victims, highlighted the bustling trade activity at the market during the incident. The airstrike occurred during peak trading hours, exacerbating the tragedy.
