Jubilation as FG Allows Colleges of Education To Run Degree Programmes, “First Time in Our History"

The Federal Government of Nigeria has allowed Colleges of Education to independently run National Certificate in Education (NCE) degree programs for the first time in the country's history. The initiative, described as a historic milestone by Minister Tunji Alausa, marks a significant reform in the education sector.

The implementation phase of this reform was formally launched during a National Summit in Abuja on August 19, 2025. The Minister of State, Suwaiba Said Ahmad, highlighted the importance of this reform, citing the Federal Colleges of Education Establishment Act of 2023.

This reform aims to enhance the competence and experience of teacher training institutions, providing qualified candidates with the opportunity to become certified teachers or lecturers. The distinction between college and university education was also discussed, emphasizing the different educational paths available to students.
