Judge Withdraws from Corruption Case Against Ex-AGF Malami

Judge Obiora Egwuatu of the Federal High Court in Abuja has recused himself from a corruption and money-laundering case involving former Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami. The case, brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), pertains to alleged asset forfeiture linked to Malami.

The judge's decision to withdraw was based on personal reasons and to avoid any conflict of interest. The case involves 57 properties allegedly connected to Malami.

Malami, who served as the AGF from November 11, 2015, to May 29, 2023, is facing 16 counts of criminal charges related to money laundering amounting to N9 billion. The EFCC accuses Malami of concealing funds in a UK bank account and siphoning millions.

Malami denies the allegations and claims the properties in question were acquired legitimately. The judge's withdrawal has led to the case being reassigned.

Malami's legal team has sought to vacate the interim forfeiture order on the properties.
