FG Declares Friday Public Holiday for Democracy Day

The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially declared Friday as a public holiday to commemorate Democracy Day, celebrating 27 years of uninterrupted democratic governance in the country. This announcement was made in a statement issued on Thursday in Abuja by Magdalen Ajani, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, on behalf of the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji Ojo.

Tunji Ojo reaffirmed the government's commitment to upholding democratic values, including the rule of law, transparency, accountability, and inclusive governance. He urged Nigerians to use the public holiday as an opportunity for civic reflection and to renew their commitment to nation-building.

The Minister emphasized that June 12 is a significant date in Nigeria's democratic history, honoring the courage and resilience of those whose struggles paved the way for democratic governance. He also noted the importance of maintaining a safe and stable environment as crucial for sustaining democracy and national development.
