Lagos Airspace Closed Indefinitely Due to Airport Fire

On Monday, Lagos authorities announced the indefinite closure of airspace following a significant fire outbreak at Murtala Muhammed International Airport. The fire began earlier in the day and quickly spread throughout parts of the terminal building, prompting an immediate emergency response.

Thick smoke and intense flames hampered rescue operations, resulting in the suspension of international flights and preventing aircraft from landing or taking off. Reports indicated that around 10 individuals were trapped on the sixth floor of the control tower due to heavy smoke filling the terminal.

While the cause of the fire has not been officially confirmed, initial suspicions suggest it may have originated from an electrical fault within the building. Helicopters were observed hovering around the airport, although their specific role remained unclear.

The airport is currently undergoing a multibillion-naira renovation project, and authorities are working to contain the situation and restore safety at the facility. An official statement regarding the timeline for reopening the airspace is expected soon.
