National Assembly Approves Creation of 6 New States in Nigeria for Geopolitical Balance

The National Assembly in Nigeria has approved the creation of six new states following a joint committee review. The decision came after considering 55 separate requests for state creation and 69 bills, as well as proposals for new local government areas.

The new states will be created in each of the six geopolitical zones in Nigeria. The move is part of a constitutional process to increase the number of states from 36 to 42, ensuring geopolitical balance and representation.

The decision follows years of consultations, public hearings, and engagement with citizens and stakeholders.
