National Assembly Moves to Establish Independent State Police

The National Assembly of Nigeria is initiating measures to create state police services that are shielded from political interference, particularly from governors and influential groups. Senate leader Opeyemi Bamidele addressed concerns raised by stakeholders regarding the proposed state police, acknowledging the historical context of regional governance during Nigeria's First Republic.

To address these concerns, the National Assembly plans to introduce multiple safeguards that will guarantee the operational and financial independence of state police services. Bamidele, representing Ekiti Central, noted that funding for state police services would be structured similarly to the judiciary, ensuring that it is not subject to the whims of state governors.

The proposal includes a provision that mandates a certain percentage of the state budget to be allocated specifically for the operation of state police services, ensuring clear access to funds as stipulated in the 1999 Constitution.
