NUT Launches Indefinite Strike in Oyo Over Abductions

The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) commenced an indefinite strike in Oyo State on June 1, following the abduction of numerous teachers and students in Oriire Local Government Area. This industrial action aims to highlight the deteriorating security conditions in schools.

The decision came after armed men invaded three schools on May 15, abducting 39 students and seven teachers, including the principal of Community High School, Esiel, Rachael Alamu, who was reportedly killed during the incident. NUT President Audu Amba instructed teachers across Oyo State to stay away from classrooms until the abducted victims are freed.

A circular signed by Amba and Secretary General Clinton Ikpitibo announced the suspension of academic activities indefinitely. The union plans a nationwide solidarity rally on June 2 to demand government action.

NUT expressed deep concern over the ongoing captivity of victims and called for intensified security measures. The National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPP) in Oyo State distanced itself from the planned protests.
