NUT Protests Nationwide Over School Abductions and Killings

The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) organized nationwide protests across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in response to the abduction of teachers and students, particularly highlighting a recent incident in Oyo State. On May 15, 2026, armed men attacked three schools in Oriir Local Government Area, resulting in the abduction of several pupils and teachers.

Abdullahi Shafa, the FCT chairman of NUT, expressed the union's outrage over the killings and abductions, labeling the situation as unacceptable and urging the federal government and relevant security agencies to take immediate action to protect educational personnel and students. The protests saw teachers and civil society groups mobilizing across various states, including Oyo, Ogun, Akwa Ibom, and Borno, demanding urgent government intervention to improve school security.

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde confirmed the abduction and killings, which sparked widespread outrage and calls for better protection measures for schools.
