Nigerian Resident Doctors Suspend Strike After Talks

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) announced the suspension of their planned strike after reaching an understanding with the federal government regarding key demands, including the payment of outstanding allowances and improvements in doctors' welfare. This decision followed an emergency meeting of NARD's national executive council, where they reviewed the government's commitments to prompt salary payments and the resolution of issues surrounding the medical residency training fund.

Although not all disputes were fully resolved, NARD expressed a willingness to continue dialogue with the government. The strike suspension is based on progress made during negotiations, particularly concerning the commitment to address salary arrears and hazard allowances.

Dr. Uthman Adedeji, president of the University College Hospital chapter, confirmed that the strike would be suspended, allowing members to resume work nationwide at 8:00 AM on Wednesday.

The agreement includes provisions for improved remuneration packages and incentives for rural postings, with a shift rollout scheduled to begin in January 2026.
