Nigerian Resident Doctors Suspend Strike After Agreement

On April 7, 2023, the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) announced the suspension of its planned nationwide strike after reaching an understanding with the Federal Government. This decision followed a commitment from the government to address pressing issues affecting doctors, including the payment of outstanding salaries and improving welfare conditions.

The resolution to suspend industrial action was reached during an emergency meeting of the association's national executive council, where members reviewed assurances presented by government representatives. NARD explained that their decision was influenced by the government's commitment to prompt payment of salary arrears and efforts to resolve lingering issues surrounding the medical residency training fund.

Despite the suspension of the strike, the doctors clarified that disputes have not been fully resolved, indicating that the Federal Government has shown a willingness to address their concerns, which initially prompted the strike threat.
