Umahi Issues 72-Hour Ultimatum to Abuja-Lokoja Contractors

On Tuesday, David Umahi, the Minister of Works, threatened contractors working on the rehabilitation of the Abuja-Lokoja highway with prosecution by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) if they do not resume work within 72 hours. During an inspection tour of road projects, Umahi stated that contractors who have received government funds but failed to fulfill their obligations will no longer be tolerated.

He disclosed that President Bola Tinubu has approved the release of funds for the project, urging contractors to deploy equipment and personnel immediately. Umahi emphasized that he would sanction Ministry of Works officials who fail to supervise projects properly, insisting that poor performance will not be tolerated under Tinubu's administration.

He also expressed concern over the deteriorating condition of the Abuja-bound carriageway, warning that 90 percent of the lane could become impassable within a month if urgent intervention is not carried out. Contractors were directed not to remove existing asphalt without the Ministry's approval.
