Southampton Coach Tonda Eckert Charged in Spygate Scandal

Southampton head coach Tonda Eckert has been charged with misconduct by the Football Association (FA) due to his involvement in the club's "Spygate" scandal, which occurred between December 2025 and May 2026. The FA's charges include three breaches of Rule E3.1, alleging that Eckert acted improperly by directing or authorizing the observation of opposition training sessions.

Southampton was expelled from the Championship play-offs in May after admitting to spying on Oxford United, Ipswich Town, and Middlesbrough. An independent disciplinary commission found that the surveillance activities were authorized by Eckert, labeling it a “contrived and determined plan from the top down.” Following the expulsion, Middlesbrough was reinstated in the play-offs and advanced to the final, where they lost to Hull City.

Eckert has until next Tuesday to respond to the charges, and Southampton has expressed its commitment to cooperate with the investigation while focusing on preparations for the 2026/27 Championship season.
