Tinubu's Justice Ministry Achieves Landmark Legal Victories

A sociopolitical group has commended the Federal Ministry of Justice, led by Attorney General Lateef Fagbemi, for its pivotal role in securing legal victories for the Tinubu administration. In its first year (2023-2024), the ministry secured 250 convictions, including 160 for various criminal offenses and 87 related to terrorism.

Notable achievements include a $50 million penalty compensation from Glencore International and a successful defense against European Dynamics, saving Nigeria $6.2 million. The ministry also facilitated the recovery of a $200 million bond and $10 million in legal costs, marking Nigeria as the first African country to defeat the firm in court.

Additionally, the Supreme Court judgment in July 2024 granted full financial autonomy to Nigeria's 774 local governments. Fagbemi's tenure is characterized by a focus on asset recovery and high-level negotiations, reflecting a departure from past controversies and emphasizing constitutional principles.
