Lawyer Claims Kanu's Conviction Threatens Nigeria's Judiciary

Onyedikachi Ifedi, a lawyer and member of the Mazi Nnamdi Kanu Global Legal Consortium, stated that the conviction of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), by Justice James Omotosho of the Abuja Federal High Court is detrimental to Nigeria's judiciary. Speaking in Umuahia, Ifedi highlighted the Nigerian government's failure to respond to Kanu's appeal against his conviction, which he argues was based on a repealed law.

He warned that the implications of this judgment threaten the legal system's foundation, describing the situation as a constitutional crisis. Ifedi criticized the judiciary for its incompetence and suggested that the conviction reflects either ignorance or malice.

He asserted that the government rushed to convict Kanu to avoid accountability, claiming that the conviction cannot withstand legal scrutiny. Ifedi cautioned that upholding the conviction would expose the Supreme Court of Nigeria to public scrutiny and embarrassment, while quashing it would require judicial humility.
