Kaduna Assembly Approves Bill for State Police Services

The Kaduna State House of Assembly has approved a bill to amend the 1999 Constitution to facilitate the establishment of state police services. This bill, titled “A Bill for an Act to Alter the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 to Provide for the Establishment of State Police Services and for Related Matters, 2006,” was sent to the state legislature by the National Assembly for concurrence.
The approval occurred during a plenary session on Thursday, presided over by Deputy Speaker Henry Dajuma. Henry Marah, Chairman of the House Committee on Information and representative of Jaba State Constituency, stated that the proposed state police system would strengthen security, improve crime response, and create job opportunities.
He noted that the current security framework limits state governments' accountability for police performance. Marah assured that the Assembly would create laws to regulate the new police service and emphasized that funding would be prioritized for this initiative, even if it required cutting other expenditures.
He expressed hope that enhanced security would allow farmers to work without fear of kidnapping.
