Adamawa Assembly Advances Bill for State Police Services

Adamawa Assembly Advances Bill for State Police Services

The Adamawa State House of Assembly has considered the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (Sixth Alteration) Bill, 2026, during a plenary session on Tuesday, presided over by Speaker Rt. Hon. Bathiya Wesley. The Assembly adopted 24 out of 26 clauses of the bill, which aims to provide a constitutional framework for establishing state police services across Nigeria.

The proposed amendments are designed to grant state governments the legal authority to create and operate their own police services, subject to national minimum policing standards set by an Act of the National Assembly. A significant provision includes the establishment of a State Police Service Commission in each participating state, responsible for appointing state police commanders, recruiting personnel, and overseeing disciplinary matters.

The Federal Police Service will continue to operate in states without established state police services. Following the deliberations, which revealed differing opinions among lawmakers, the Speaker directed the Clerk to communicate the Assembly's position to the National Assembly.

Hon. Mahmud Musa Kallamu, Chairman of the House Committee on Information, discussed the implications of the proposed legislation for security management.
