24-Year-Old Cleric Dies in Police Custody in Kano Amid Allegations of Brutality

In Kano, a 24-year-old cleric, Salim Usman, died in police custody after being arrested on suspicion of buying a stolen bag of flour. Usman was reportedly picked up from his residence in Kuntau and accused of the theft last year.

His father, Sheikh Adam Usman, alleged that CCTV footage showed police officers maltreating Salim during his arrest, leading to his death in custody. The family filed a formal complaint against the police, who have arrested an officer for unprofessional conduct pending an investigation.

Salim's body was released for burial after an autopsy at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, with the report awaited.
