Kano Chief Judge Releases Seven Inmates on Medical Grounds

On a recent Friday, Justice Dije Abdu Aboki, the Chief Judge of Kano State, ordered the release of seven inmates on medical grounds after reviewing the cases of 82 awaiting-trial individuals during a jail delivery exercise at the Kurmawa and Goron Dutse custodial centres. This initiative is part of efforts to expedite justice and protect the rights of those in custody.

The Public Relations Officer of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Kano Command, Musbahu Nassarawa, confirmed the Chief Judge's decision, noting that some inmates had been held for years without formal charges. Justice Aboki emphasized the importance of fair and timely justice administration.

Ahmed Lakpene, the Controller of Corrections in Kano, encouraged the released inmates to utilize their freedom positively and adhere to the law. The exercise also aimed to reduce overcrowding in correctional facilities and improve access to justice, with participation from various justice-sector stakeholders.
