Kano Court Sentences Two to Death for Groom's Murder

On October 2025, a Kano State High Court sentenced two men, Aliyu Hussaini and Amir Zakariyya, to death by hanging for the murder of a newly married man, Yazid Haruna, during a robbery. Justice Amina Adamu ruled that the prosecution proved its case beyond a reasonable doubt, describing the attack as brutal and disturbing.

The incident occurred at 2:47 AM on June 11, 2025, in Sheka Sabuwar Abuja Quarter, where the defendants reportedly armed themselves with long knives and machetes to attack the victim. They robbed him of two mobile phones and 19,500 Naira, subsequently stabbing him multiple times, leading to his death from the injuries.

Although the defendants denied the charges and pleaded for leniency, they were convicted under sections 97(1), 298(c), and 221 of the Kano State Penal Code, receiving sentences of death for culpable homicide and life imprisonment for armed robbery.
