Kano State Boosts Power Capacity with New Substations

The Federal Ministry of Power, in collaboration with the Kano State Government and the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), has commissioned four new transmission substations in Kano State, which collectively add 544MW of electricity wheeling capacity to the state and the national grid. The substations are located at Walalambe, Kumbotso, Dakata, and Dan-Agundi.
The Walalambe substation features an 80MW capacity with two 40MVA transformers, while Kumbotso has a 300MVA capacity at the 330kV level, along with 100MVA transformers. Dakata and Dan-Agundi each received an additional 100MVA transformer at the 132kV level.
These projects aim to alleviate congestion at overloaded substations, enhance bulk electricity transmission, and meet previously unmet demand. Notably, the Walalambe substation will supply power to the Tokarawa Industrial Area and has reconnected Lee Group to the national grid after over three decades.
The projects align with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and are expected to foster industrial growth and improve the welfare of residents.
