Kano State Faces Emir Dispute Over Sallah Durbar Plans

Kano State is currently embroiled in a dispute regarding the planned Sallah Durbar, which involves two emirs: Muhammadu Sanusi II and Aminu Ado Bayero. Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has issued counter statements concerning the legitimacy of the two emirs.

Sanusi II, who was dethroned in 2020, continues to assert his claim to the throne, while Bayero, the 15th emir, has formally notified the police of his intent to host the Durbar at Nassarawa Mini Palace. The conflict dates back to 2019 when the emirate was split into five by former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, reducing Sanusi II's domain.

In 2024, Governor Yusuf plans to repeal the law that created additional emirates, potentially reinstating Sanusi II. The ongoing rivalry has led to separate prayer processes and celebrations, raising concerns about potential clashes during the 2025 Durbar.

The state government has reiterated that the judiciary remains the appropriate avenue for resolving the dispute.
