Tensions Rise in Kano with Separate Eid Prayers

On Eid el-Fitr, Kano experienced significant tension as three separate prayer gatherings highlighted the divisions within its traditional leadership. The 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, led prayers at Kofar Mata Eid ground, attended by Governor Abba Yusuf and senior state officials, focusing on unity and peace.

Meanwhile, the 15th Emir, Aminu Ado Bayero, held a separate session at Nasarawa Palace, led by Sheikh Kamaluddeen Albasa, attracting notable political figures. Rabiu Kwankwaso, leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement, observed prayers privately at his residence, joined by close political associates.

This division traces back to the emir crisis that began in 2020, which led to Sanusi II's removal and Bayero's appointment. The situation escalated with Sanusi II's reinstatement in 2024, resulting in parallel claims to the emirship and reflecting the ongoing political and social tensions in Kano.
