Kano State Advances Gender Equity and Economic Empowerment

Kano State is taking significant steps to strengthen its gender equity framework, reaffirming its commitment to advancing gender equity and women's economic empowerment. Hajiya Amina Abdullahi Sani, the coordinator of the Gender Equity Women Economic Empowerment (GEWE) Project, convened a strategic meeting with key stakeholders to review progress and develop a 2026 action plan.

The meeting, which included representatives from various sectors, aimed to enhance coordination among partners promoting gender equity across the state. Sani acknowledged the achievements in policy reform and emphasized the need for harmonization of ongoing programs to achieve greater impact.

The meeting highlighted milestones such as the adoption and implementation of a women’s economic empowerment policy framework, targeting interventions to support 400 survivors of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV). The commission urged a participatory approach and bold ideas for stronger collaboration, focusing on measurable outcomes.

Nethan Bako, the GEWE project lead, identified economic dependency as a major driver of gender-based violence in Kano State, stressing the importance of sustainable economic empowerment initiatives.
