Kano State to Enroll 6,000 TB Patients in Free Scheme

The Kano State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency announced plans to enroll no fewer than 6,000 tuberculosis patients in a free treatment scheme aimed at improving access to healthcare and reducing the burden of the disease across the state. Dr.

Rahila Mukhtar, the Executive Secretary of the agency, disclosed this initiative on Wednesday during an advocacy visit to the Kano TB Network Society, which is coordinated by Sunusi Hashim. Dr.

Mukhtar explained that the agency has already extended healthcare coverage to people living with HIV, including tuberculosis patients in vulnerable groups. She described tuberculosis as a major public health challenge that requires urgent intervention and stronger collaboration among stakeholders to ensure patients receive adequate treatment and support.

The enrollment in the health insurance scheme is expected to reduce financial barriers to healthcare and improve access to diagnosis and essential medical services. Kano State has one of the highest tuberculosis burdens in Nigeria, with an estimated 33,961 cases documented in 2026.
