Kanu's Terrorism Appeal Progresses with Legal Steps Outlined

Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), is currently undergoing an appeal process against his terrorism conviction. His lawyer, Ejimakor, provided a statement detailing the legal steps involved.

The notice of appeal was filed in February 2026, initiating the appeal process. The first stage involves compiling the transmission record from the Federal High Court in Abuja, which includes the charge sheet, court proceedings, exhibits, and the judgment from the trial court.

Kanu's legal team plans to file a brief argument within 45 days of receiving the appeal documents, outlining 22 grounds for appeal to overturn the conviction. The federal government will then have 30 days to respond.

Kanu's lawyer may submit a reply brief within 14 days after that. The appeal court will schedule a hearing date, and oral arguments will be presented to a three-member panel.

The court will reserve judgment delivery within 90 days, with the possibility of allowing the appeal, quashing the conviction, or ordering a retrial.
