Police Clash with Workers Over King’s College Concession

On September 16, 2026, a confrontation occurred at King’s College, Lagos, as armed policemen, led by Lagos State Commissioner of Police Fatai Tijani, forcibly opened the school gates to confront protesting workers. The workers, members of the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (ASCSN), were resisting attempts to reopen the college following a Federal Government decision to concession it to the King’s College Old Boys’ Association (KCOBA).

The ASCSN had previously shut the gates to disrupt the resumption for the 2026/2027 academic session, declaring the school would remain closed until the concession decision was reversed. Tensions escalated when police attempted to take control of the gates, leading to a face-off with the workers.

Emmanuel Abiya, Treasurer of the King’s College Parent-Teacher Association, described the situation as resembling a “war,” alleging excessive force by the police. Olusola Omidiji, Lagos State Chairman of ASCSN, reported that an elderly woman was pushed to the ground during the altercation.
