KDI Launches Platform to Enhance Civic Space Accountability

On Friday, Bukola Idowu, Executive Director of Kimpact Development Initiative (KDI), unveiled a new Civic Space Accountability Platform in Abuja. This platform aims to document and track responses to violations affecting civic space and democratic freedoms in Nigeria.

Idowu emphasized the necessity of the initiative due to growing concerns over the shrinking civic space and the intimidation of citizens, which weakens accountability mechanisms in the country. The platform was developed through broad consultations with 120 civil society organizations across Nigeria's six geopolitical zones.

It serves as a central tool for reporting incidents and documenting evidence to sustain advocacy around issues affecting civic freedom and human rights. Idowu expressed concern over recurring violations during political activities, including ongoing primary elections, often ignored without consequences for perpetrators.

The platform aims to keep such issues in public discourse until justice is achieved, referencing the aftermath of the #EndSARS protests and the need for accountability in reported abuses.
