Nigeria Introduces Hybrid Payment System at Airports

The Nigerian Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has announced the introduction of a hybrid payment system at airport access gates nationwide, allowing for both cash and card payments. This decision comes after the suspension of a fully cashless system, which had led to severe traffic congestion at airport entry points.

The suspension was ordered by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu due to the significant gridlock created by the cashless policy. Following a meeting with senior officials from the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria, Keyamo emphasized the need for modifications to the payment system to enhance efficiency.

The hybrid payment system is set to be implemented on March 13, 2026, while motorists can continue using the FAAN Go Cashless card until further notice. The electronic payment options will remain operational, and the government encourages road users to adopt electronic card systems to improve payment infrastructure.
