Benue Worshippers Kidnapped During Vigil Released Safely

On February 8, 2026, worshippers were kidnapped during a night vigil at St. John Catholic Church in Benue.

DSP Edet Udem of the Benue State Police Command confirmed their release on February 11, stating it was unconditional. Following credible intelligence, police arrested two suspects, Abubakar Jibril and Ashiru Ibrahim, who were found in possession of five rounds of 7.62 mm ammunition.

Udem explained that the investigation led to a joint operation by the police tactical team, which resulted in the recovery of an AK-47 rifle and eight additional rounds of ammunition on February 14. The suspects are believed to be part of a kidnapping syndicate directly linked to the abduction.

The police command has intensified efforts to track down other fleeing members of the criminal network. Udem also acknowledged the support received from the Benue government and local security agencies, emphasizing the importance of inter-agency cooperation in ensuring public safety.
