Workers Reject TUC's Strike Suspension Over King's College

On September 16, workers under the Joint Workers Council of the Federal rejected the Trade Union Congress (TUC) announcement suspending the strike related to the proposed concession of King's College, Lagos. They threatened to keep Federal Unity Colleges closed until their demands are met.

The protest, which entered its fourth day, involved blocking the entrance to the Federal Ministry of Education in Abuja. Joint Council Chairman Abraham Onuche stated that the TUC had no authority to call off a strike it did not coordinate.

The unions had previously requested a meeting with Education Minister Dr Tunji Alausa on July 6 but received no response. Onuche urged the minister to revoke the concession decision, warning it could lead to similar arrangements by other schools.

Meanwhile, parents at King's College formed a barricade to prevent the Old Boys Association from entering, with President Kassim Imam Ibrahim denying any plans for ownership change. The strike's impact was felt nationwide, with some schools remaining closed.
