Kwankwaso Accepts NDC Vice-Presidential Ticket Alongside Peter Obi for 2027

Rabiu Kwankwaso, the former Governor of Kano State, has formally accepted the vice-presidential candidacy of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) alongside presidential candidate Peter Obi for the 2027 election. Kwankwaso announced his decision during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, stating that the alliance aims to create a political platform that bridges Nigeria's regional and religious divides.

According to Kwankwaso, his choice to join Obi's ticket stems from three primary considerations: the promotion of national balance, the pursuit of equity across Nigeria's geopolitical zones, and a commitment to advancing democratic reform. The former governor noted that his interactions with Obi during the 2023 presidential election campaign altered his earlier assessment of the former Anambra State governor, ultimately convincing him that both could effectively collaborate to serve the nation.

Kwankwaso expressed confidence in the viability of their combined candidacy, asserting that the Obi-Kwankwaso pairing possesses both the credibility and administrative capacity required to compete effectively in the 2027 race. He maintained that their partnership represents a political combination capable of addressing Nigeria's pressing national challenges, though he did not specify which issues would be prioritised.

The alliance marks a significant political development ahead of the 2027 election cycle, as both figures previously competed separately in the 2023 presidential contest. Kwankwaso served as governor of Kano State between 1999 and 2003, while Obi was governor of Anambra State from 2006 to 2014 before his 2023 presidential run as the Labour Party candidate.
