Kwankwaso Returns Amid US Sanctions Threat Over Violations

Rabiu Kwankwaso, the leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), returned to Nigeria on a Sunday via Abuja after a trip to India. He was welcomed by party officials, including the NNPP chairman and the deputy governor of Kano State.

The purpose of his trip was to meet with an educational institution, and he received an award during this visit. However, his return comes amid discussions of a proposed U.S. bill titled the "Nigeria Religious Freedom Accountability Act 2026" (HR 7457), which recommends sanctions against individuals accused of religious freedom violations in Nigeria.

The bill, co-sponsored by various legislators, suggests visa bans and asset freezes against those involved in such abuses, including Kwankwaso and the Fulani ethnic nomad militia. As of now, Kwankwaso has not publicly responded to the proposed U.S. sanctions.
