Kwara State Addresses Health Risks of Open Defecation

The Kwara State government has issued a warning regarding the health dangers linked to open defecation, calling on residents to embrace proper sanitation practices to safeguard public health. Bashir Turawa, Assistant Press Secretary to the Ministry of Water Resources, highlighted the urgent need for improved sanitation and hygiene across communities.

Hon. Usman Yunusa Lade, during a sensitization program in Ilorin, noted that open defecation significantly contributes to disease spread and exacerbates climate change by contaminating water sources. The government, led by Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, is taking steps to construct public toilets across the state, which is seen as a critical initiative to curb open defecation.

The Kwara Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency is collaborating with local stakeholders to promote hygiene practices. The program aims to educate market traders about the dangers of open defecation and encourage community ownership of sanitation practices.

The government appeals for support from NGOs and emphasizes that achieving total sanitation requires collective responsibility.
